Creating a Space of Your Own

Everyone needs a little “me time” and a corner to call their own, just to breathe and relax.

With a few personal touches, you can turn any room or space in your home into your very own sanctuary. A place to reflect, read, create, write or fill your cup with any number of therapeutic activities, including meditation, art, and online learning.

Involving the senses creates an immersive experience that provides you with relaxation and comfort. Think about how you would like to feel after spending time in your space.

Essential oils may play a role in the aromas you wish to experience and it is scientifically proven that specific aromas trigger emotions and memories.

Consider the type of lighting and accessibility, such as clap-activated lights that create the ambiance you are after, with bright and dimming options, to complement your activities.

Remember that music is powerful too, so keep your favourite playlist close by.

Place your creature comforts nearby, such as a knitted throw, plush pillows, a water bottle, or something refreshing to drink. Ensure proper ventilation and add a touch of greenery such as potplants to promote oxygen.

Your space can be anywhere, even outside if you find gardening therapeutic or enjoy the benefits of porch sitting, while you listen to the birds and sip your favourite beverage.

Creating a space of your own means that you feel safe, unbothered, and totally comfortable. Our Support Coordinators at Ability Connect would love to assist you with planning for your unique space, whether that includes accessibility for wheelchairs and walkers, or looking at options for grab bars and risers to make your chosen space a supportive, safe one.
