Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion by creating your diversity & inclusion calendar.
There are a number of good reasons to have a diversity and inclusion calendar for personal and professional use. The Calendar can be tailored to include any range of national and international days to be observed. You may want to create social or awareness events around topics that interest your community, whether in a work environment or socially to involve your friends and family.
In the United Nations example here, you can even click on a topic to learn more about the event. A diversity and inclusion calendar serves as a reminder to celebrate the wonderful qualities that give us individuality and a sense of belongingness.
Having an awareness of days that celebrate different cultures, abilities, historic events, and other significant characteristics gives meaning to a diverse and supportive society. Understanding and acceptance of unique differences are essential in preserving respectful boundaries in personal and professional relationships and it is an opportunity to discover things that are meaningful to the people we engage with daily.
For example within your circle of friends, you may want to take turns hosting a Culture and Cuisine Dinner Party each month. As a form of community participation, you will be celebrating and learning about each other’s heritage.
More importantly, by fostering a deeper understanding of who they are as individuals your friends and co-workers will appreciate the effort you have taken to understand their world.
If your friendship circle is not that diverse, you may want to research new cultures as a fun activity for everyone to learn more about the history, origins of traditions, and the people of various countries and complement the night with a game of Trivia! With so many treasures to be found in embracing diversity and inclusion, there’s no reason for anyone to be excluded. Another great way to encourage inclusion is by participating in sports and recreational activities for all abilities.
It is fair to acknowledge that one’s perspective of diversity and inclusion is most often shaped through personal experiences and beliefs, however, in the words of the late Nelson Mandela, “It always seems impossible, until it is done.”
